Ok you Collin Nurses! I just want to tell you, in case you have forgotten, I Love You Guys SO MUCH! Yes, I am shouting it! This time really reminds me of the very early 80s when there was a horrible new disease that destroyed the immune system and killed all of its victims. We really hardly ever used gloves to care for our patients back then. Yes, that included cleaning up code browns! We were taught that our patients needed human touch. The smell of poop in your fingernails (someone elses) will never be forgotten by this nose! (by the way, hydrogen peroxide gets it right out!). We were all very afraid. This is different and by far, as we know now, much, much more deadly. Keep informed. Over protect yourselves. Dont take unnecessary chances. Wear your eye protection! Wash and rewash your hands. Dont touch your face or mouths. Show the professionalism and extreme intelligence you are all known for. Above all, please stay calm and focused. When you panic you can make mistakes. Take the time to go to classes that will be given and then research for yourselves. The media continues to bring up the question whether or not ebola can be transmitted in the air and whether or not the current face masks are enough or should you use a respirator type mask. Here is where I ask u to over protect yourselves. Be a voice to infection control in asking for ALL the right equipment to do your jobs. Until you have the necessary tools for protection, do not do the job. Dispose of contaminated equipment and supplies appropriately. It seems that contamination may occur most easily when shedding your PPE. Watch the unlicensed staff closely and educate them as needed. If ANY of you are providing care for our fellow HCW exposed or positive for ebola, have someone who is an expert in the. infection control of it, watch you as you don and doff your isolation gear. Make them tell u if something is contaminated. And, above all else, pray for your own wisdom and protection. Call me if u need to. Remember I am invested in you for life! You are so loved!
