Ok, you asked for it, Jackson. The Grandmaster (2013) by Wong Kar-wai is quite something. Not the sort of martial arts film youd expect from Hong Kong/China. Some great choreography, displaying some impressive demonstrations of Wing Chun and other Wushu disciplines, although these fights did tend to have too many close ups. The camera should not really focus on the details of the techniques being presented, but rather it is shot as a whole, as not one movement is used in isolation in the forming of technique. Tony Leung was great as Yip Man, in fighting ability and dramatic portrayal. Zhang Ziyi, as always, stuns me with her badassness and wonderful screen presence (and she reminds me a lot of my girlfriend, but I digress). I felt there needed to be a climax to the film in order for the coda to me a lot more relieving. Overall, it is definitely worth seeing, but in my books, I dont think Ill watch it again. A great drama.
