Okay - it took me four days but I FINALLY saw Into The Woods! For those who have been waiting to see what I think - here it goes! Upon first viewing, I have to say that I think that it worked for the most part. *SPOILERs AHEAD*. What amounts to the first act on stage is handled very well in the film treatment. Its the second act that suffers in the film from being slightly rushed. There isnt enough of a passage of time between what is the first and the second act. So many cuts were made to what is the second act of the show that what is there seems somewhat rushed and disjointed. The friend that I saw the movie with had never before seen the show and several times turned to me and said things like It seems like something is missing. And she was right. Little moments of character development and plot explanation were missing. I think the musical numbers were fantastic. I think It Takes Two and Moments in the woods were the two songs that translated the best from stage to screen. I really also enjoyed Agony, I know things now, and Giants in the sky. No one is alone was beautiful too. Ill have to see it again to be totally sure, but I really liked it. Could it have been a better adaptation? Maybe. Could it have been a better film? Maybe. Its still pretty satisfying. Its not quite as spectacular as Chicago, but its nowhere near as bad as Rent, The Producers, or Jersey Boys!
