Okay Hamza, here’s the deal. Several decades ago or you would prefer the ‘once upon a time’ sort of prologue. Funny as it may seem to you but spot-on it is right to the bone marrow. Well it was a fine sunny day most conducive for an outdoor game. I took a ride with a gentleman I will not tell you the name of at this juncture nonetheless. But relax, it will come by. We headed for another town a bit farther from the outskirts of the place we were at. It was a game of hockey. Some hotshot team had challenged ours. Well I said ‘ours’ when I was just a mere visitor. Or was it a tournament. It’s not important actually. The gentleman I was with played as a goalkeeper. Our team won by a single goal. I had a bit of a role in that particular goal. But that wasn’t important either. What was most or vitally important then? Let me ask you. Well how would you rate a goalkeeper if his proficiency is dared 11 times? And what are the merits if none succeeds? What quality ease you can enjoy if you have a guard of that grit at the goalpost? The Vespa ride back wasn’t waspish since we won. On our way back, there was this inevitable discourse. “I say why not join the Army with that kind of phenomenal defense. Rest of your team was bullied though. They attempted your post 11 times for the love of God Almighty! You stood firm. Was it a fluke or the invading forwarders had some sort of a squint? The match wasnt fixed Im sure. All said & done, you ought to take up Army. You are son of a senior police officer. He guarded the streets. You take up the borders”, said I. We laughed our way back home. The aforesaid gentleman entered through the 55th portal to his destiny. Here comes the epilogue. Who was he? Most of the readers have probably already figured out. Bhijan Farooq left a world so absolutely speechless that day as The Goalkeeper. Good on you bhijan. That was awesome. You may take a bow. Only if I were not blown off the line after the 54 PMA LC Appeal Med Board back in 1974 with that silly systolic murmur, how proud a senior I’d have been today. Not that I’m not any less.
