Okay, I normally dont rant on these things because I believe everybody has the right to watch stuff, however nonsensical, disturbing or bad the content is. But its distressing to actually hear TV dialogues as you wander across your living room on days when you are already receiving stinking mails from nasty superiors. Every now and then I come across these local soaps (edited) that my mom is watching on TV and the kind of stuff they perpetuate is insulting to basic sense and decency. Just in the last month I wouldve heard dialogues that are disturbing and could potentially influence young naive people who are listening to it. One such suggests that a woman who is not married by a certain age is committing a horrendous act and is a bad reflection of society, family, culture and values. This dialogue is stretched and beaten into her head by a random cop who sees her walking alone to a police station and he says its no place for a woman to be walking ALONE into and that she needs a man beside her. Then there is another scene where everybody in the family jumps in joy, with some really bad background music, after the woman in the family, who was presumably coerced into marrying some random dude, reluctantly agrees to the marriage due to compulsion and emotional blackmail. The celebration ensues, and everybody is happy because she has now come to understand her place in society and how important it was for her to stop expressing her individuality and freedom and agree to this farce that is being imposed on her. The disturbing part is that these are just random scenes in what otherwise must be full of this shit, and none of this nonsense is actually presented in a manner that is critical of cultural practices, norms and beliefs. The show doesnt present anything with a view to expose or question societys prejudice and problems, in fact it is presented in such a way that it dramatises and reinforces this absurd dominant view of society and women. Its scary to think there must be people out there watching this thinking that this is normal and valid behaviour.
