Okay, Im not an argumentative person... But sometimes I have to say SOMETHING. Just now, I read a Facebook post saying something to the effect of: Have you ever heard stay in school or you wont amount to anything? Then the person proceeded to list Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg as examples of people who succeeded without college degrees. I have a MAJOR problem with Black people saying this. MAJOR. So lets clear up a few things: 1. FIRSTLY, these are ALL white men. I would not recommend any Black person in America patterning their entire career after the path of a white man. Lets face it. We arent playing by the same rules! If you examine successful Black people: Politicians: Barack Obama Activists: Angela Davis Preachers: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Actors: Angela Bassett Writers: Toni Morrison Executives: Kenneth Chenault The vast majority of successful Black people are VERY well educated. Even, over qualified. Yeah there are white men who have become successful novelists with high school diploma. Do you think I give a damn? That shit dont apply me. Most of the successful Black writers are Ivy League material. Its a different game. 2. SECONDLY, even if you were a white man... even if these rules applied to you. There is a HUGE difference between dropping out of Harvard... And failing out of community college. The two are not synonymous. We must compare apples with apples. Stop looking for short cuts! Do the work you need to do! (I think Im going to make a YouTube video about this...)
