Okay, Mason parents who have kids who didnt make the cut for the Rock Hall & Cleveland Hard Rock dinner... HERE is the PLAN as it stands now: Date: TBD, but likely between now and 4th of July, probably on a Saturday or Sunday so siblings and both parents can go too -- Its going to be fun. Time: TBD, but likely a Noon to 7pm-ish thing, and possibly later if we head to Comerica for a ball game. Plan: 1) Meet at MOTOWN MUSEUM on West Grand Boulevard just a few blocks from the Fisher Building (The tall one with the green roof on the way downtown). Totally easy to find, lots of parking, and tour tickets are around ten bucks. Its the studio Berry Gordie built, and recorded just about every famous Motown song you ever heard, including pretty much everything Michael Jackson did up until Off the Wall and Thriller. Temps, Tops, Supremes, Marvin Gaye, etc. A real American treasure, right here at home! 2) The Kid Rock Music Lab at the Detroit Historical Museum. Its a temporary exhibit I dont have all the details about, but it looks like the kids can learn to record their own music, learn the recording process, learn about sound and what works and doesnt work, etc. Seems pretty kickazz from the little I know so far. More to come, and the Museum is probably a five to ten minute drive from Motown, just literally across the corner from the DIA (Detroit Art Institute) on Woodward. Again, lots of safe parking and last time I was there the actual museum was free, but lets assume its another ten bucks for admission and a soda. 3) Late lunch at the Hard Rock Café - Detroit. I have not eaten there, but worked in the building for satellite broadcasts and it is as good as any other Hard Rock around the world. Lots of Motown costumes, drum kits and guitars, and more modern stuff from Madonna, etc. Food is a little pricey, but no more than the Cleveland stop would have been. Theyre a company chain so prices are consistent. The restaurant is at the base of Campus Martius, another ten minutes straight down Woodward toward the river. Not as easy to park, and depending on events, that might be a $10 or $20 spot, but the Opera House is a good, clean place as well as the underground parking right there in Grand Circus Park where the traffic circle is located. Ill map everything out when we have a solid plan. 4) POSSIBLY... A Tigers game? Nothing to do with music, really, but if you get that far downtown its almost a shame not to get a $12 or $14 ticket in the upper deck just to see the boys of summer! Its a block or two from the Hard Rock so once you pay for parking it would make sense to get your moneys worth for the space :) So... Details to come, date to come, but please let me know if there is something huge I missed or should add. I want all our kids to have that music experience. I have been to the Rock Hall and as cool as it was, I know Studio A at Motown will be just as memorable if not more. Yeah, they will lose out on the fun of a long bus ride yelling and throwing Red Vines at each other, but we can still make this a great day if we put the right spin on learning about the music of your own hometown. BTW, I would like to thank School Board member Bob Piggott for all his support in trying to get another last minute bus added to the Monday trip. It wasnt meant to be, but Bob was there for us all giving it his best effort. One of the guys you always want looking out for our kids. He cares. Thanks again, Bob.
