Okay, as promised here is the form letter suggested by sources to send to the Ohio legislators. Facts verified by sources. Please feel free to adapt this for yourself and add personal information so it is less of a form letter such as I am a concerned dog owner, I am a concerned dog breeder, etc. Feel free to share this with all who will speak out for Piper. ********************************************************************************** I am writing to you on behalf of someone who has been wrongfully deprived of their property – a very special kind of property. You see this property is a beautiful dog named Piper. During a family emergency, Piper escaped the back yard of the home where she was temporarily staying while her owner was out of town. She was picked up by the local shelter in Franklin County on Thursday the 17th of April. Since Piper in addition to being a well-loved family pet is also a Champion show dog, she has lots of identification, papers and a microchip. You would think with all this identification, the story would have a happy ending and Piper would have been returned to her family but here is where the story goes wrong. The shelter made one attempt to contact the vet who was indicated on Piper’s microchip. Her chip was scanned on Good Friday. The vet was called and told the shelter he had sold the office and her records were not on the computer but he could get them from his hard files if they gave him some time. Ohio Law requires an identified animal to be held 14 days and the APHIS law (Federal overrides state law) requires a full 5 day hold. Piper was held by the shelter for two and a half days over a holiday weekend and released to a “rescue” operating under the name of Central Ohio Sheltie Rescue or COSR. THE “RESCUE” HAS REFUSED TO RETURN PIPER TO HER LEGAL OWNERS and has decided that they should keep the dog. Here is a link to a recent newspaper story: bestinshowdaily/blog/pipers-saga-the-early-days-a-closer-look/ This rescue has decided to put up $10,000 bond rather than return this dog to a loving family home despite a court order to return the dog. The rescue took a dog from a shelter before the legally mandated time limit was up. They have been provided with overwhelming proof that the dog has a home and a family and they are still refusing to return the dog to its lawful owner. This story has spread nationally through social media and many dog breeders are expressing concern about showing their dogs in Ohio for fear an accident may leave their dog in the hands of a rescue like this one. Dog Shows have brought millions of dollars annually to the state according to the statistics compiled by the American Kennel Club. I hope you will give your help in the return of Piper to her family. This could be your dog or anyone’s dog. Piper has a home and doesn’t need to be “rescued”.
