Okay, here is a new memory challenge. Many people believe that the creek running from NE of Oelwein, thru town, then SW of town to Lake Oelwein is called Otter Creek. WRONG! Otter Creek begins NW of Oelwein, runs through the old conservation club (next to Woodlawn Cemetery), through Red Gate Park, into Lake Oelwein, through Hazleton and through, of all places, Otterville. It eventually runs into the lake in Independence where it joins the Wapsi River. The creek NE of town is known as Alter Creek and is created by farm field runoff beginning just east of East Line Road. It runs through Wings Park, downtown Oelwein, under the railroad yards, and joins up with Otter Creek in the area of 10th St. SW and just east of 6th Ave. SW. (just south of Mulford Addition). From there to Lake Oelwein. Now, here is the challenge: I can find no document to substantiate this claim, however, if someone has an old NW Bell telephone directory, circa 1950-1960, read inside the cover where it discusses some facts about Oelwein. It will discuss the founders, population, etc. and will discuss both Otter and Alter Creeks. Then, hopefully, you will post a picture of that page for the rest of us. I havent given up looking myself, but so far, am hitting a blank wall.
