Okay my first tip. I went around to local wood places in Eugene, Bring Recycling, Lane Forest Products. I was able to find items that I want to purchase at Bring like windows, and wood. However, this comes at a price so beware. Lane Forest Products was wonderful they allowed me to come in and get some wood that they were recycling and have my pick for my beginning projects. I called some companies and asked about pallets but in Oregon everyone recycles and so it is a bit of a challenge. Check out everywhere that you can. Send me your location and I can research some places for you to help out. Also dont forget to talk to people about what your doing. Ray in a new friend who hooked me up with some wood scraps as well. Dont be afraid to beg, borrow, and offer to remove garbage for people to get a bit of wood for free.
