Okay, question educators, Ada just read the word small on her own... Im sure it is a sight word for her from the many times Ive pointed it out in Dr. Seuss books, etc, but heres my question: Ive always thought that I should teach her to sound out words first because I didnt want her to rely too much on memorizing sight words and use that as a crutch. But she shows very little interest or patience for sounding out words at this time, and I dont want to push her and make it so reading isnt fun. Soooo, would sight words build he confidence and interest (shes very visual) or would it ultimately impede her ability to sound out words?
