Okay, tell me where I am wrong. The tragic accident where the man - TopicsExpress

Okay, tell me where I am wrong. The tragic accident where the man perished on Mount Marathon is now hitting the courts. The comments are a bit alarming to me as people seem to think that volunteers should have stayed on the mountain until the last runner made the turn. There are so many races around the world that have cutoff times. My feeling is that if you cant make it to point X in time and you choose to continue, youre on your own. Its really not right to ask people to hang around all day while you try to complete a task that you either have not trained for or dont have the physical ability to complete. As a race organizer, you try your best to keep track of who starts and finishes but not everyone who picks up a bib shows up on race day. Some people start, the race is going poorly so they leave the race. I can promise you that any race I was director, there was a large knot in my stomach when they take off the starting line and you do your best to keep them safe. I will be watching this closely, there are a number of events that are far more remote with far less support than Mount Marathon.
