Okay...this is MY thought on the whole, Belfry Middle School - TopicsExpress

Okay...this is MY thought on the whole, Belfry Middle School Teacher talks mean to her students etc. I heard the recording. And Ive seen most of you jumping on the Oh my gosh, Im so shocked, off with her head, bandwagon. Well, Im not one of those people. I, for one, think that we have too many teachers molly-coddling our children, in fact the whole public education system tends to do that. Teachers have a TOUGH job, and todays parental baby them to death climate does nothing to help them much... we send our kids to them to be educated, but do we do next to nothing to see that they get their homework or study or go to class prepared. Kids (for the most part) think school is a big joke and dont realize that education is the only thing that has a snowballs chance in heck of getting them out of the cycle of poverty that many live in. Do I think kids need to be verbally beaten down...of course not..but thats not what I heard. I heard a teacher using an unorthodox way to MOTIVATE her students... telling them they were just taking up space if they were putting no effort into her class. It reminded me of another tough love teacher that was ridiculed and who turned a school around when no one thought it could be done. He also motivated by saying what many said was harsh words. His name was Joe Clark and they made the movie Lean on Me about him. In the movie, a mother lead an uprising against him for his unorthodox ways... but in the end he prevailed and more importantly -- so did his students. Look...the world is NOT going to take it easy on our kids. If they stick their toe outside this region they had better be ready for the cold hard fact that its a dog eat dog world out there. I for one want my children ready for that. So push them hard. And if theyre not even TRYING on a homework assignment ...if they are putting down absolutely nothing on their paper -- then yeah...go ahead and tell them that theyre just taking up space -- but youll probably have to get in line behind me...because if, as a parent, I find out that one of mine is not bothering to put anything down on a homework assignment... Im going to be telling them that myself and doing something about it. Here is another teacher who was telling it like it is -- From the movie, LEAN ON ME -- Principal Joe Clark: [explaining why he expelled students from his school] They say one bad apple spoils a bunch. Well what about three hundred? Rotten to the core!
