Okay, this is a sort of writer question, and Id love some feedback. 1st or 3rd? Im working on SOLDIER GIRL, writing 3rd person limited. (All you the reader knows is what the character knows, but theres an invisible narrator telling it to you.) Im wondering if I should switch to 1st person. (Thats where the story is being told by the main character, as in, I have a bow and arrow, and Im saving the world with it. The advantage of 3rd is I can cherry-pick scenes, hopping from place to place. Thats how I wrote GONE. It gives me a bigger canvas, I can cover more ground, I can intro more characters and we can know what they think, not just what the lead thinks they think. The advantage of 1st person is that its far easier to write and every time I get out-sold its by someone writing in 1st. Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent - all 1st. Its easier for readers to think, Oh, shes just like me! 3rd takes a little more work by the author and the reader. Im writing MESSENGER OF FEAR in 1st and its honestly like Im barely working. We did ANIMORPHS in 1st and when people ask how we could write 14 books a year, its in large part because it was all 1st. 1st is more intimate and emotional, and the story will be more narrowly focused. Its sort of standard definition, versus high definition where you get a bigger picture on the screen. Then again, in 1st youre reassured I wont kill the narrator, and I hate it when youre reassured. As you can see, Im back and forth. So, thoughts?
