Okay, this might just be my favorite fight of them all. Briefly, heres the scene: Bess (Sara Nichols) and her crew, having successfully battled the Spanish hordes, find themselves thrust into the midst of a hurricane. Blown wildly off course, the ship founders and the crew is lost. Intermission. When we return to our gallant crew, only three of them- Bess, the loyal warrior Roughman (Matt Kozlowski) and hapless, lovable Clem (Matthew Maher)- have washed up on the beach. Believing Goodlack to have perished in the storm, Bess taunts the heavens: I fain would know what greater misery there is that Heaven can inflict. If there be so, I dare it. Let it come! Enter...the Bandits! I love this fight for a lot of reasons. First, Roughman- without a sword- must first fight with whatever he can find on the beach. A bag, a bucket, a portion of the mast Clem tosses him. Also, the mixture of desperation and comedic brilliance that both Clem and Roughman project into the scene. And, finally, Matt Kozlowskis masterful, tireless fight work, ably accompanied by his merciless adversaries (Paul Kalina, Geoff Coates, Jason Hays, Rob McLean and Ted Koch (the guy in the veil)). Finally a note to my fighter friends: You should all go to bed at night PRAYING to play a character as cool as Roughman one day. And nobody did it better than Koz. Enjoy!
