Okay, time for a little cultural literacy. Im amazed at the amount of people that never heard of Crimea before today. In the mid 19th century, Russia lost to Britain, Napoleonic France, Sardinia and the Ottoman Empire in the Crimean War. This was a world war before it was cool to call them world wars. The only superpower not involved was the USA. Unfortunately, we werent going to be much of a force because.......Oh yeah, The Civil War, I mean The War of Northern Aggression. Anyway, two things of American culture came out of that war. 1) The phrase mine is not the reason why, mine is just to do or die. Of course, that is paraphrased, but it comes from the poem from Alfred, Lord Tennyson, The Charge of the Light Brigade .....Forward, the Light Brigade! Was there a man dismayd? Not tho the soldiers knew Some one had blunderd: Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.... Yeah, they got their asses whupped. 2) Florence Nightingale gained her fame in the Crimean War. My good friend mike Titlow, told me she had a pet owl. I really dont know, but it sounds great. She was known as Lady with the Lamp. The founder of modern nursing. Dont ya feel better knowing this.
