Okay, well, its seeming like people can misunderstand this distinction Im making, so let me try to make it clear. In any opinion I express about Ferguson, I am not in any way negating the harsh truth that race was and is a key factor in how this whole situation (and so many like it) have gone down. Of course it was. And that is part of a whole level of systemic wrongness that I likewise do not deny, either in its existence or in the need to change it. What I am saying is that I find it offputting when people post articles about Why Race X Should Care About Ferguson or whatever, for two reasons. 1. Everyone should care about racism. Everyone should care about the idea that all humans should be treated like humans, whether you think you personally are going to benefit or not. Which feeds nicely into: 2. Everyone should bloody well care about the precedent set by police officer shoots young person six times when said person poses no immediate threat, killing said person; local police agency essentially imposes martial law rather than investigating or revealing details of this event, threatens journalists, holds town hostage using military gear, holds fundraisers to defend officer, and generally makes itself as militant and responsibility-resistant as possible. How in holy bejeebus are people compartmentalizing that into a black thing?
