Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray was selected third overall in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft on Thursday night. The Colorado Rockies chose Gray, a powerful right-handed pitcher from Chandler. Gray is the Sooners’ highest draft pick since Bobby Witt was taken third overall by the Texas Rangers in 1985. Stanford pitcher Mark Appel went overall No. 1 to Houston. With the second overall pick, the Chicago Cubs selected power-hitting third baseman Kris Bryant from San Diego. Gray reportedly was flagged for Adderall during a pre-draft testing program. The news did not damage his draft status, just as many experts predicted correctly earlier this week. Gray is scheduled to be the starter in the Sooners’ Super Regional matchup at LSU on Friday night. Gray was a 13th-round selection in the 2010 draft by the Kansas City Royals after his high-school career. He was a 10th-round pick by the New York Yankees in the 2011 MLB Draft after one season at Eastern Oklahoma State College, but chose to transfer to Oklahoma. Oral Roberts pitcher Alex Gonzalez is expected to be a first-round selection, as is Yukon High School catcher Jonathan Denney.
