Old habits die hard. I was looking at these membership transfer forms from when we were still in the ELCA, and I began wondering about what it means to be a member of an association rather than a denomination. Our congregation still has the old form of membership categories brought over into our new constitution: Baptized, Confirmed, Communed, Contributing and Voting (ccc members), as well as “Associate.” When the new constitution was written it just seemed obvious that’s the way it should be done, and since we bump up against a bunch of denominations that are set up similarly, I will still probably be sending out requests for membership transfer the rest of my career, but it means something a little different to me now than it used to.
