Olympia and the ADA A few weeks ago we told you about the grand plans unveiled by the Ilitch-owned Olympia Entertainment, Inc. for a new hockey arena and multi-use mega development for downtown Detroit. Not only will the new facility be a boon for jobs and economic development, but it will also be a lot friendlier to those with disabilities. Olympia and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan recently announced an agreement to ensure physical accessibility to the new area, which would also drastically improve accessibility for people with disabilities at the Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings’ current home. The settlement agreement concludes an investigation by the Department of Justice following a complaint filed by a patron under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The company will work closely with an architect to ensure the new arena is ADA compliant, and will provide 45 wheelchair-accessible seats, companion seats, and improved sight lines at the Joe, CBS Detroit reported Have accessibility issues hindered your enjoyment of events at Joe Louis Arena? What else would you change about the JLA? ow.ly/AfrjP
