Omega-3s Beneficial for Adolescent Behavioral Health Through an animal model of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, researchers found an increase in anxiety and hyperactivity in adolescent animals, as well as a reduction in the rate of learning and problem-solving, in comparison to animals given diets that contained adequate amounts of omega-3. The deficiency appears to adversely affect expression of dopamine-related proteins in the CNS. This suggests that this dietary deficiency can compromise the behavioral health of adolescents, a group already vulnerable to behavior disorders. Biological Psychiatry, January 2014
