On 11/21/13 at about 2:15pm, an emotionally troubled 60 year-old harbor man for whom the Brookings Police and the Curry County Sheriffs Office had been searching arrived at the Brookings Police Department. The man had attempted suicide in the past and had recently made statements he intended to attempt again. As Officers were enroute to contact him, he left on foot towards Rays Food Place obviously distraught. Several Brookings Police Officers made contact with him and he pulled from his pocket a box cutter type knife with an approximately 5 razor blade. He placed the knife to his neck and ignored Police Officers requests to drop the knife. When the man began to walk toward Rays entrance, a Brookings Police Officer deployed his Taser, immediately incapacitating the subject and terminating the potentially deadly confrontation. With the assistance of the Curry County Sheriffs Office and the Oregon State Police, the man was safely taken into protective custody and was transported to the Curry General Hospital for evaluation and treatment by mental health professionals.
