On 16 November at noon, at Cauble Cemetery (about 2 miles from Lake Victor, which is about 15 miles north northeast of Burnet), a grave dedication ceremony will take place to honor Sergeant John Oliver Jinkins (U.S. Army, 1855-1860; Co. G, 26th Mississippi Infantry, 1861-1865). This ceremony is being held by Sons of Confederate Veterans, Hill Country Camp 1938 (Fredericksburg/Kerrville), with assistance from United Daughters of the Confederacy, Adam R. Johnson Chapter 2498 (Burnet). I am honored to be a part of the ceremony, as SGT Jinkins is my great, great grandfather. He had a distinguished career, both in the United States Army and Confederate Army. My only ancestor to buy a slave, he took the man to his saddle shop, gave him his freedom, and hired him as a paid saddle making apprentice. When he left to join the Confederacy, he gave the saddle shop to the former slave.
