On 3 July 1988, American Navy vessel the Vincennes, shot down an Iran Air passenger plane over the Persian Gulf whilst it was flying on its usual scheduled route. The aircraft, an Airbus A300 B2-203, was destroyed by SM-2MR surface-to-air missiles. All 290 on board, including 66 children and 16 crew, died. This attack ranks tenth among the deadliest disasters in aviation history. The United States never apologized to Iran. It is interesting how America has become involved in the shooting down of Malaysian Airline over Ukraine, calling for punishment of those responsible and putting pressure on Russia. The audacity of US double standards is unlimited.
