On 7 August 1942, seventy-one years ago today, the U.S. 1st Marine Division, under the command of Major General Alexander Vandegrift, began Operation Watchtower, the first U.S. offensive of the war, by landing on Guadalcanal and the smaller islands of Tulagi and Florida in the Solomon Islands chain. The Japanese had landed on Guadalcanal a month earlier to construct an airbase; U.S. strategic planners concluded that allowing the completion of that base would imperil Allied transportation lines to Australia. The Marines quickly took control of the airbase, naming it Henderson Field and finishing it for use by Allied aircraft; but they did not soon evict the Japanese defenders from the island. The Guadalcanal Campaign would continue until 9 February 1943, resulting in an American victory that left 7,100 Allied dead and four captured, 29 ships sunk, and 615 aircraft destroyed. The Japanese lost 31,000 dead, 1,000 captured, 38 ships sunk, and 680–880 aircraft destroyed, but were able to evacuate 10,652 men.
