On 8 June 2008, Podolski made his Euro 2008 entrance against debutants Polandin a Group Bmatch in Klagenfurt, Austria. He scored both goals in a 2–0 victory. He avoided celebrating his goals, however, to show respect for his country of birth. After the game he gave an emotional interview on Polish television. The goals put him in the lead in the Euro 2008 goal-scoring list for two days until David Villascored a hat-trick for Spainagainst Russia.
