On 9/11: 6,640 Americans died... That was 2007. In fact on average, 6,640 people die in the US every day. Leaving behind loved ones. On 9/11/2001 3000 people died in a horrible attack on the trade centers and another 6,640 Americans died for some unrelated reason. Heart Disease and Cancer took their daily average toll of 3,750 people. The real damage that occurred to our country was the fear that was the terrorists intended goal. Operation Enduring freedom has thus far claimed the lives of 6,830 soldiers, sailors, and marines. Since the war began 129,000 (!) Iraqi CIVILIANS have died as a result of violence. In the 13 years since 9/11, there has been a 17 fold increase in hate crimes against the arab community in America. The hate spawned in 9/11 has spawned over 5,500 hate crimes against Arabs in the US. Crimes like this: In January 2009, Memphis store clerk Mohammed Al Hadi was murdered by an unknown assailant who calmly took aim and then fired, as if he has some vendetta. On the same day, at another grocery story nearby, another clerk of Middle Eastern descent was also murdered. We should remember and honor those we knew who were impacted by this event. We should remember and honor the bravery of the men and women who came to the rescue. We should remember the service members who offer up everything they have to protect what they hold precious. We should remember what it feels like to lose somebody you love. We should remember the context and scope of this event. We should forget the fear. We should forget the hate. We should forget 9/11.
