On April 2, 2014, Henry County Animal Care and Control received a call that a dog had fought with and killed a raccoon on Carver Road in McDonough, GA. The raccoon was taken to the Georgia Public Health Laboratory for rabies testing, and the results were positive for the rabies virus. The Henry County Animal Care and Control Department has issued a 31-day Rabies Quarantine, as required by the Georgia Rabies Control Manual, for a half mile (1/2) mile area surrounding Carver Rd., which covers James St. and Washington St. in the city of McDonough, GA. During this quarantine, residents living within this area should make sure that all of their companion animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, administered by a licensed veterinarian, and if not, should have companion animals vaccinated as soon as possible. Additionally, residents should be vigilant of the behavior of not only their own pets, but also of surrounding wildlife (e.g. foxes, skunks) which are acting in an unusual manner.
