On August 13, 1964, a middle-aged crooner with a 15-year-old song replaced the Beatles at the top of the Hot 100 songs in America. Dean Martin singing “Everybody Loves Somebody” had the number one song in the nation. Martin’s conductor and piano player had originally written the song for Frank Sinatra. “Everybody Loves Somebody” was recorded by Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee and several other big-time singers. Dean Martin’s version was the only one to be a hit. The success of this song inspired NBC to give Martin a weekly series, that began in 1965 and ran for nine years.
