On August 1st, 1989 (25 years ago today), I was wrapping up a summer spent working on an oil field remediation project in south-central Alaska. After work that evening, I hopped a commuter plane to Anchorage International Airport, where I met up with my fiance, Gayle Hays. I still vividly recall that reunion as one of the happiest moments of my life. We rented a car, grabbed dinner (fresh-caught salmon at the Double Muskie), then made the four-hour drive back to Soldotna, arriving just as the sun was setting (around 2:00 am). Five days later, after Id finished the last of my project responsibilities (and wed crammed a month worth of church-mandated pre-marital counseling into four days), we were married by Pastor Jim Pearson in the Soldotna Lutheran Church, in front of 13 family members, coworkers, and friends (with my client serving as the organist). Lots of adventures since then - not least raising a fine young man together (shout-out to Nate Hubert). But it all began with that first adventure - driving together around Turnagain Arm under the midnight sun - 25 years ago this evening.
