On BBM just now, my friend revisited a not-really-recent past on the SLS fever I dont wish to catch. He wrote: Gimba, I thought youre the winner with Sanusi as Emir. He represents your interests as a progressive Muslim. I remember you were on his side in all his debates, especially with the late Sheikh Jaafar. Youve to realise that Sanusi has finally found a platform to influence both conservative north and conservative Islam without serious challengers. I think the Wahhabis or the Salafis or whatever they call themselves are going to find it hard to break the Kano emirate under SLS. It wouldve been a more interesting reign if Sheikh Jaafar were alive. Well, Im not from Kano emirate. My emir, a quiet Gbagyi man, is Dr. Umar Faruk Bahago of Minna, the place I call home. My own assessment of Emir Sanusi II is, hell either become a revolutionary monarch whose style may influence his colleagues to catch up with the Time or, if the praises and the quest for vengeance possess him, hell end up as an uppity king. But may God intervene!
