On Being Brought from Africa To America by Phillis Wheatley Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land, Taught my benighted soul to understand That theres a God, that theres a Saviour too: Once I redemption neither sought nor knew. Some view our sable race with scornful eye, Their colour is a diabolic die. Remember, Christians, Negros, black as Cain, May be refind and join thangelic train. .....I want you to really understand this poem.....When you REALLY understand this poem, than you will understand why I refuse to accept any religion forced upon my ancestors (not only African Americans, but the indigenous Taíno of Puerto Rico, and also the Native Americans) fear and brutality ripped my ancestors from their lands, forced to accept a religion brought by immigrants, and were and still are, to this day, viewed as minorities. Thats what I mean when I say wake up I wont judge you and your views on religion. Those are yours and yours alone to have. All I can do is ask you to truthfully ask yourself why do you believe what you believe? And Do you know your history?
