On Friday, I will be attending Heathfield Community School to assist with a whole day Year 10 workshop of World at Work. As an ex student of Heathfield, I am so honoured to have been invited to attend the World at Work day. It will be very bizarre being the one having questions aimed at me - only 5 years ago, I was a student there asking the questions! The idea of this course is to give students an idea of options for them once they leave school, and to give them a chance to meet a variety of skilled workers and business partners from around the country. I will be there to represent Somerset Emergency Volunteers and to also stress the importance of volunteering in the local community. Volunteering can bring a wealth of knowledge, an abundance of contacts and alternative networks as well as invaluable skills. It is also the greatest feeling giving something back to your community. You also gain immense personal skills that you may not be able to find or hold in a regular working environment - I for one can second that, after learning to drive a digger and a dumper this year (A five minute crash course counts, right?) There are many voluntary avenues out there for all to explore suitable for any age and ability, and volunteering is just as credible on a CV as is a conventional job. I look forward to meeting ex teachers, pupils and business partners for what will be a fantastically educational day for all involved.
