On Friday, Surfrider Hunter Branch was down at Newcastle Harbour - TopicsExpress

On Friday, Surfrider Hunter Branch was down at Newcastle Harbour supporting the Pacific Climate Change Warriors blockade with a range of other key environmental groups and community members. The Warriors are in Australia as part of 350.orgs protest of the port, which formed the flotilla of the both Warriors and volunteers including members of Surfrider Hunter Region. The protest blocked coal ships for the day, aiming to gain awareness and appreciation of the impacts Australia (and other nations) play on small pacific islands - those most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change and the ongoing use and investment in the fossil fuel industry. The daughter of Marshall Islands president Christopher Loeak, Milan Loeak stated We just want to share our stories and make sure that people are aware that the decisions that are being made over here are directly affecting our islands back home. It was great to see such a huge turnout of such a diverse range of people from an array of age brackets and backgrounds. Major newspapers and websites around the globe provided coverage on the days events, labelled an overall success by the organisers. What we can do right now is just keep pushing, taking part and supporting movements like this to bring more awareness on the issue and ultimately get more people to act.
