On Immigration Reform: Ten years ago a wonderful woman came into my life. Eva, was like a second mother to me. She taught me many wonderful things about life, but through watching her I learned most about compassion. She lived a very secluded life, here, in America. She was afraid often, of people mostly. I never understood why, but I imagine it was the same fear I see in many immigrants. Its the fear that limits the ability to move about freely; its the hesitation that creates pause before speaking in broken English and the timid glances that are exchanged in public spaces. She lived most her life in a basement; the divisions between rooms parted by curtains strung through twine. She loved her very tiny life, compartmentalized as it might have been it was her own and she loved it deeply. Our country is divided by many things, one of which is immigration reform. I recognize the fear and I understand the fight, but mostly I wish for the kind of reform that would honor the humanity in others; a kind smile, a cordial glance and patience when being spoken to in trembling accents, these are the small reforms I seek for our country. Like the curtains that divided the spaces in my Evas basement so too are the borders which divide our planet. We many not speak the same language nor have the same beliefs, but we are all citizens of the world made of flesh and bone and palpitating hearts. Our compassion for others should never be compromised by our dissimilarities. Humility, I also learned that from Eva.
