On Jan 23, 2012 a rash of moderate to strong tornadoes skipped across Alabama; they concentrated along a corridor from Birmingham southwest to north of Tuscaloosa. The EF-2’s and EF-3’s came in the overnight hours between 3 and 4 a.m. One of the most intense was the Center Point tornado. This half-mile-wide EF3 generated 150 mph winds, killed one person and injured 75 more. Damage was moderate to severe; the elementary school lost a large portion of its roof and more than 100 homes suffered major roof damage. In the higher wind cores exterior walls of well-built homes collapsed resulting in a complete loss of the structure. More than 200 buildings along the 15-mile path of the tornado were either damaged or destroyed. According to the Birmingham National Weather Service a total of 11 tornadoes were spawned that night in central and northern Alabama ahead of a strong cold front. Damaging straight-line winds and some reports of flash flooding were also logged in the area. Final human tally for all of the tornadoes that night: 2 killed, 100 injured.
