On January 14th, we had a most informative Relief Society Meeting on Emergency preparedness. For those of you who could not make it, here are a few notes from that meeting. Celia Summers talked about food storage on a small budget and for small spaces. 1. First start with a 3 month supply of food then move to a 6 month, etc. 2. Store what is in your normal diet. Buy a few extra things each time you go shopping. Make sure your children will eat what you are storing. 3. To determine how much of an item you will need for your storage, for instance a jar of peanut butter, write on the item the date you opened it. See how long it takes you to use that item, then calculate how much you would need for your storage. 4. Water - 1 gallon per person per day. 5. For small spaces thing outside of the kitchen. For example, roll #10 cans of food storage under your bed. 6. Use zipper bags, fill with food storage items and put under bed. 7. Bookcases with decorative baskets. Fill baskets with storage items. 8. Create a shelf using #10 cans. 9. Purchase GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) to have handy. It will kill germs in water and can be used to wash fruit and vegetables. This can be purchased at a health food store. 10. Mylar bags are excellent for storing food in small spaces. Many Mylar bags can be placed in a 5 gallon bucket and stored in closets. 11. In case of an emergency, fill bathtub with water. Water can be used to flush toilets, brush teeth, etc. For further information go to this websites: https://lds.org/ensign/2009/03/family-home-storage-a-new-message providentliving.org extension.usu.edu/foodstorage/ fema.gov/pdf/library/f&web.pdf living-providently-today.blogspot/2013/12/food-storage-for college-students-and.html http:notyourmothersfoodstorage foodstoragemadeeasy.net/site-highlights/small-spaces-storage-solutions/ backdoorsurvival/food-storage-tips-for-the-space-challenged-prepper/ family-survival-planning/food-storage-system.html We also received some great information on 72 hour kits. We have an excellent two page handout. If you would like a copy, please let one of the presidency know and we will get it to you. For more information you can go the website: Be Ready Utah The most interesting tip was how to light and heat a room using two clay pots and tea lights and to protect your electronics from electromagnetic pulse solar flare disruption by placing them in an old microwave. For any further questions, please contact one of the presidency.
