On January 25, 1820 - The state capital of Illinois was moved from Kaskaskia to Vandalia. Kaskaskia was the first village that Clark and his men captured in 1778 and where they began their daring mid-winter march to Vincennes in 1779. Most of the town was destroyed by flood in 1881 as the Mississippi River shifted to a new channel, taking with it, part of the Kaskaskia River. Today, the town lies on the west bank of the Mississippi River and has a Missouri zip code, but is considered part of Illinois, with an Illinois area code. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 14, making it the second smallest incorporated community in Illinois in terms of population.
