On January 7 2015, Royal Thai Embassy visits NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Science, technology and innovations is one of many areas of cooperation between Thailand and the United States, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is one of the many U.S. agencies that have been working with agencies and institutions in Thailand. With a view to further enhancing collaboration with one of the world’s leading space agencies, Ambassador Vijavat Isarabhakdi led a delegation to visit the Goddard Space Flight Center, one of NASA’s major space research laboratories which focuses on building of spacecraft, instruments and new technology to study Earth, the sun, our solar system and the universe, on 7 January 2015. Joining the visit were Defense and Military Attaché, Air Attaché, Science and Technology Attaché, representative from the Office of Educational Affairs and Thai scholarship students currently studying in the United States. The delegation had discussions and briefings with Dr. Colleen Hartman, Deputy Director for Science, Operations & Program Performance and other scientists and representatives of the Center regarding the work of the Center and progress of cooperation between Thailand and NASA, including cooperation that NASA has with Thailand’s Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation and the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency as well as universities. Both sides shared the view that such cooperation has benefited both the peoples of Thailand and the United States and should be further promoted. In his remarks, the Ambassador stressed the importance of science, technology and innovations as a key area of cooperation that offers vast potential for further expansion. He also reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to cooperate with NASA on a number of projects such as the NASA-DEVELOP, which provides an opportunity for young professionals from countries, including Thailand, to lead research projects for 10 weeks under the guidance of NASA, focusing on utilizing NASA Earth observations to address community concerns and public policy issues. Another important joint project is the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station or ARISS, which allows students worldwide, including Thai students, to have opportunities to have direct conversations with crew members of the International Space Station through amateur radio, and be educated and inspired to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. In addition, NASA is also organizing the Exhibition “NASA- A Human Adventure,” showcasing NASA’s technology currently organized in Thailand from 1 December 2014 to 1 February 2015, which has been well-received by the Thai public. During the visit, the Thai delegation also visited some of Goddard’s main laboratories, one of which – namely, the Detector Development Lab – is headed by a Thai scientist.
