On July 13, 2012, a court handed down heavy prison sentences to activists and journalists (including myself) convicted of “terrorism” offenses. Famed journalist Eskinder Nega got 18 years for writing opinion pieces that analyzed that Ethiopia could face something like the Arab Spring. The injustice was widely condemned and even the U.S. State Department called the sentencing “deeply disappointing.” The late dictator Meles Zenawi had overseen and pursued fictitious charges against anyone critical of his brutal and corrupt misrule. I find it a miracle that he died on July 14, 2012, a few hours after his kangaroo court delivered the unjust sentencing against so many innocent people including those forced to live in exile. This appears to be judgment from above, a pure act of providence.
