On June 23 after two terms in office, Sali Berisha, head of the Democratic Party in Albania, conceded defeat to Edi Rama of the Socialist Party. Genc Mlloja, the editor-in-chief of the Albanian Daily News, explains that though many feared a messy transfer of power, Berisha accepted the results, paving a smoother path for the Socialists to make the reforms necessary for Albania to join the European Union.
