On June 24, 2014, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Representative Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH) and Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) will join Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. During the ceremony, the leaders will also present a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, whose leadership within the Civil Rights Movement greatly contributed to the law’s passage. The Congressional Gold Medal represents Congress’s highest expression of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions to our nation. The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol. Additional details will be released closer to the date of the ceremony.
