On KALE and COLONOSCOPIES: (Its a little lengthy, but Eliza asked me to share this from my GO-180 emails)...Did you know that your large and small intestines move your food about 25 feet through the body?! Now that is Bowel Power!! March 29th is our Blue Ribbon 5k Run/1 Mile Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness…What Are You Doing to Prevent It? About 40 percent of colorectal cancers are actually preventable through screening. If you’re in the high risk category for developing colon cancer (ages 50-75), 70% of you won’t have a colonoscopy, and therefore won’t detect a polyp before it develops into cancer. Breast, lung, and brain cancers can’t be prevented in the same way as colon cancers, because colorectal cancers start with a polyp. Colonoscopies can find polyps…and save lives! Besides being largely preventable, colorectal cancers often develop slowly, allowing time to discover and remove polyps. Dr. Church of the Cleveland Clinic states, ““Every colon and rectal cancer arises from a polyp or other pre-cancerous lesion, and it takes 10 years on average for a polyp to become cancerous – which is why standard guidelines suggest colonoscopies once a decade starting at age 50. Sadly, every patient who walks into my office with cancer had a polyp that could have been taken off,” Dr. Church goes on to say, “They missed the boat for some reason: They were too scared, their family doctor didn’t recommend it, their insurance company wouldn’t pay for it, or they had a colonoscopy and their doctor didn’t see it.” Even if you’re younger, but have a family history of colon cancer, or if you have any abnormal symptoms or rectal bleeding…talk to your doctor! And don’t forget the best way to prevent any cancer: water, nutrition, exercise, sleep, and spiritual time…the basics! -Adapted from an article by the Digestive Health Team of the Cleveland Clinic Speaking of colon health…do you know which veggie is better for yours?
