On March 22, 2014, I had the privilege of being able to preform the marriage ceremonies for a small portion of the 300 couples that were lawful married after Michigans discriminatory ban on marriage equality was struck down. It was without a doubt one of the most important and meaningful things I have ever been involved with. Shortly thereafter, Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette refused to recognize those unions and fought their recognition in federal court. Today they lost. It is my sincerest hope that todays important victory for loving LGBT couples in Michigan will be followed by the U.S. Supreme Court granting certiorari in DeBoer v. Snyder tomorrow. Today school children learn about Loving v. Virginia and the end of discriminatory anti-miscegenation laws. I hope that in the future children will learn about DeBoer v. Snyder and the end of marriage discrimination against LGBT Americans. After his ignominious defense of Michigans marriage equality ban, it would be only too fitting for Governor Snyders name to become synonymous with discrimination in American history. For my part, I look forward to the day when I can help other loving LGBT couples tie the knot in Michigan. Its cant come soon enough.
