On May 12, 2014 LOWA with the help of the Department of Natural Resources is finishing a five-year E.coli and nutrient cove study at the Lake. LOE will be performing lab work on samples taken by LOWA volunteers. This will be a 22 week study from May 12 to October 20. The first half revealed the Lake is healthy, but it is adversely impacted by storm water runoff. Fish need nutrients that are naturally in the Lake, but when humans dump excessive amounts of nutrients into the Lake, it upsets the natural balance and can threaten the fishs environment. In 2010, the State of Missouri Clean Water Commission listed the Niangua Arm of the Lake as impaired for excessive phosphorus levels; the Osage Arm was on the Environmental Protection Agencys 303.d List of Impaired Waters for excessive nitrogen.
