On May 26th it will be Memorial Day. A day we give thanks for those who give and gave. I was on a ride yesterday and heard something that brought back all the pain of returning home after Viet Nam. I survived, to an extent, but I was told yesterday that there are allot of people who are claiming that the Nam Vets are lying when they say they were spit on when they came home. I dont talk about Nam because I moved on but these simple minded idiots have pushed my button! I was Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1971 after 4 years, 3 years 8 months were in the Tiawan Straits, Cam Ron Bay, Green river, and others. The USA sold the USS Forester DER 334 to the Vietnameese in 1971. I was part of the crew who stayed aboard to train them to run the ship (That, in itself is another story.) After that we were discharged and I was sent home. I flew to San Fransico to get my papers. After landing back in the States I felt a rush of pride for serving my Country and its people. We walked off the plane and into the terminal, seabag in hand. Walking proud, Service medals, E-5 Chevron, back at home. Only a returning Service person can know the feeling. As I started to walk down the long hall a teenager about 15 or 16 walked up to me and asked if I was in Viet Nam, I said yes with the rush of expectation. This young man, all in one well rehearsed move yelled Babby killer spit in my face and threw red dye on my dress whites. I just stood there, I started crying. I was given a new uniform and told not to worry about it. I have never told this story to any one, but these fools who say things like this never happened, Ill pray for you. This did happen to allot of us due in part to the media, Jane Fonda and the like. I survived, worked hard, and retired from Kaiser to enjoy life with my wife and our grand kids and great grand kids. Viet Nam, If you only knew! Bless all who have just welcomed us home, its been a long time coming but welcomed.
