On Monday, March 17, the Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living began the Community Champions Week as a part of its March for Meals campaign. Mayor Jim Gray of Lexington participated in the event at the Lexington Senior Center to show his support for our community’s homebound and hungry seniors. March for Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, initiated by the Meals On Wheels Association of America. It is designed to generate public awareness about senior hunger and to celebrate the invaluable services provided by Senior Nutrition Programs across the country. March for Meals is also intended to help recruit new volunteers from our community and to increase fundraising from local businesses and supporters. Mayor Gray helped to prepare and deliver meals to homebound Fayette County senior clients. Delivering home bound meals helps officials connect with constituents as well as develop a better understanding of elder nutrition in their home areas. “We are excited about having our local officials participate in our March for Meals Community Champions week,” said Celeste Collins, Director. Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States promote March for Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. Community Champions Week is a component of March for Meals that utilizes the involvement of local Mayors and other local elected officials. If you are interested in participating in a March For Meals event, please contact your local senior center or the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1-866-665-7921.
