On Monday, September 02, 2013, an IMPD East District officer responded to a theft report. The victim was a mother reporting the theft of her 7-year-old daughters bike; a bike she just recieved for her birthday. The family also reported the theft of another bike belonging to the little girls 8-year-old brother just days earlier. The mom was crying as she showed the officer photos of the bikes in case he saw them in the area. The officer noticed both mom and dad worked hard to provide for their family, but had little left over for luxuries, much less replacing stolen gifts. Without hesitation, the officer drove to Walmart and picked out two bikes to replace the bikes which were stolen. When he explained what he was doing, Walmart provided a discount on the bikes as he was paying for them out of his own pocket. This officers actions demonstrate the caliber of officers on IMPD in contrast to what often gets portrayed.
