On Narayaneeyam day……. Melpathoor’s scholarly arrogance or Poonthanam’s humble devotion; Which is dearer to the lord? Holy Scripture Narayaneeyam dedicated to Sri Guruvayurappan (Sri Krishna) was completed and offered to Sri Krishna on the Narayaneeyam day. Narayaneeyam Day 2014 date is December 14. Narayaneeyam was composed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri as a condensation of the Bhagavad Purana in 1036 shlokas (stanzas). The unparalleled spiritual work is noted for its literary merit and bhakti (devotion) and is a classic in its own right. To relieve Narayana Bhattatiri of his arthritis, Ezhuthachan, a Malayalam poet and Sanskrit scholar hinted- meen thottu koottuka (start with the fish).However, Bhattathiri, understanding the hidden meaning, decided to present the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu starting with the fish. On 27 November, 1587 when he finished the last dashakam (Ayuraarogya Sowkhyam) he was cured of his arthritis. Later when Bhattathiri refused to correct Poonthanam’s writings ,his arthiritis again started acting up. In his meditation, he heard the Lord Guruvayoorappan telling him that Poonthanam’s composition with humble devotion was more precious to him than Bhattathiri’s scholarly knowledge with arrogance.
