On November 20, 1942, the Alaska Highway was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Soldiers Summit, Mile 1061. Five U.S. soldiers and 8 RCMP constables in dress uniform lined up facing the red, white and blue ribbon, which was stretched across the road. The ribbon was cut by E.L. Bartlett, then Alaskas voteless delegate to Congress (and later senator), and Canadas Ian MacKenzie, MP from Ottawa. The 18th Engineers band played God Save the King and The Star Spangled Banner.
